Canisters are required in at least one Georgia stretch and could be required for backpacking in other areas as black-bear incursions increase. These canisters are Forest Service-recommended for Appalachian Trail backpacking.
The small canister (BV450) weighs 2 pounds, 1 ounce, before adding 4 days of food.
The large canister (BV500) weighs 2 pounds, 9 ounces, before adding 7 days of food.
Built-in guides keep tie-down straps in place.

After reading about protecting my food and bears on the AT I decided to buy the smaller Bearbox. It is heavy when filled with food. I decided I didn’t need so much food!!
It fits in my pack nicely and I’ve added some items other than food!
I’m keeping it!
