Product Description

The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail is the only biography of an Appalachian Trail Legend. Emma "Grandma" Gatewood made a bit of a media stir in the 1950's during and after her first (of three) solo thru-hike of the A.T., but little was widely known of her beyond the Keds, the laundry bag, and the grit. Award-winning reporter Ben Montgomery is the first to tell the story of what drove her to hike.

A New York Times Bestseller

2014 National Outdoor Book Award Winner for history/biography.

From the back cover:

‘Grandma Gatewood’s Walk is a brilliant look at an America – both good and bad – that has slipped away, seen through the eyes and feet of one of America’s most unlikely heroines. Gatewood’s story suggests anything is possible; no matter your age, gender, or quality of your walking shoes.’ –Stephen Roderick, Author of The Magical Stranger

Ben Montgomery. 2016.
