Earl Shaffer, the first to report an A.T. thru-hike (1948), hiked the Trail end to end for the third time in 1998 at age 79, four years before he died. All his life, he most often expressed himself through poetry, and his view of this adventure was no exception. Fifty-four pages long, it's the way Earl originally wrote it. With photographs of Earl and that last hike by his friends.
